Kate Handley Attorney

Kate joined Cullinan and Associates as a Consultant Attorney in November 2019. Kate holds a Bachelor of Social Science from Rhodes University, and an LLB and LLM from UCT, the latter achieved cum laude. Before joining the Cullinan’s team, Kate completed her articles at a large corporate law firm in Cape Town, whereafter she joined a specialist environmental law firm in 2015.

Kate is an experienced attorney, having worked in the legal sector for nearly a decade. She has extensive knowledge of environmental, administrative and planning law matters. Her experience includes: providing advice a wide range of clients in her fields of law, drafting and responding to appeals against environmental authorisations and other environmental and planning decisions, preparing and reviewing environmental management plans for protected areas, advising on the tax benefits of conservation activities, and providing environmental law training. Kate is also a seasoned litigator. Most recently, Kate has been involved in advising an NGO seeking to challenge authorisations granted to an energy major to permit offshore oil and gas exploration on South Africa’s east coast. Kate has also presented at several conferences and seminars over the years.

Kate is a member of the Executive Committee of the Environmental Law Association of South Africa (also serving on the ELA’s Parliamentary Commentary Sub-Committee).
